We are pleased to announce that two new doctoral students have joined our research group as members of the Doctoral School of Earth Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).

Péter Mucsi will focus his research on the subsurface volcanic rocks of Hungary. His work will center on the Nyírség region, where he will investigate the deposits of large volcanic eruptions using modern analytical techniques. His research will contribute to a deeper understanding of volcanism and geodynamics in the Carpathian–Pannonian region.

Two members of our research group participated in the 5th Earth Mantle Workshop,
held in Vienna, Austria, on July 16–17, 2025.

Szabolcs Harangi attended the event as an invited participant and served as a field
trip leader for the excursion showcasing the basaltic outcrops of the Little Hungarian
Plain and the Balaton Uplands.

Our group was also represented by Kende Szűcs, who gave a presentation on our
recent research findings titled:

The IAVCEI 2025 Scientific Assembly – the largest international gathering of
volcanologists held every four years – took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from June
30 to July 5, 2025. (more information)

On June 11, 2025, Réka Lukács, head of the research group, successfully defended
her doctoral thesis before the commitee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. On
June 27, 2025, the Doctoral Council of the Academy awarded her the scientific title
Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (D.Sc.).

On June 11, 2025, Dániel Udvardy successfully defended his MSc thesis with an
excellent (grade 5) result at the ELTE Faculty of Science, MSc in Geology
program. His research was carried out within our research group, the MTA–HUN-
REN CSFK Lendület "Momentum"; PannonianVolcano Research Group.

Title of the thesis: Petrological and geochemical study of dacites around
Sátoraljaújhely (NE Hungary)
Supervisor: Réka Lukács; consultants: Szabolcs Harangi and János Szepesi.
Congratulations on the outstanding work and achievement!

The 37th OTDK Physics, Earth Sciences and Mathematics Section took place between 22-25 April 2025, where three students presented their research work related to the work of our research group.

HUN-REN has published a summary of our April field workshop. Read the article here.

Hungary’s First Volcanology Field Workshop Concludes with Resounding Success. In early April, our research group and the IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) Commission on Volcanogenic Sedimentation held a successful five-days-long international field workshop in Northern Hungary. This was the first organized international field program in Hungary where experienced volcanologists, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students could explore a broad range of volcanic sedimentation processes.

This year the 15th Assembly of Petrology and Geochemistry is organised by the research group in collaboration with Slovakian colleagues. The international conference will take place from 2 to 4 October 2025 in Nagybörzsöny, Hungary. More details here: https://geochem.hu/conf/15kgvgy/

The Commission on Volcanogenic Sediments (https://cvs.iavceivolcano.org/welcome-to-commission-on-volcanogenic-sediments/) is proud to organize the First International School on Volcaniclastic Sedimentation - CVS goes to Hungary. The school will be held in Hungary from the 7th to the 11th of April 2025, in collaboration with the MTA–HUN-REN CSFK Lendület "Momentum" PannonianVolcano Research Group.
