We are delighted and proud to congratulate Kata Temovszki-Molnár, who has been awarded the prestigious János Bolyai Research Scholarship!
Starting in September, Kata will work on her research project entitled “The significance of noble gas isotopes in better understanding volcanic processes”, supported by the scholarship.
The 23rd Congress of the Carpathian-Balkan Geological Association (CBGA) has come to an end. The conference was hosted by Babeș–Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca from 9 to 11 September.
We are very happy to welcome Abigail Martens and Maylis de Dinechin to our research group!
Abigail joins us from the University of South Florida (Tampa, USA) and Maylis from Sorbonne University (Paris, France). They officially became members of our team on September 1. We are especially proud that Abigail joins us through the Momentum MSCA Programme!
Emese Oelberg-Pánczél successfully defended her MSc thesis on June 9, 2026, graduating with an excellent (grade 5) result in the Geologist program at the Faculty of Science, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). She conducted her research within the framework of the MTA–HUN-REN CSFK Momentum PannonVolcano Research Group.
Title of her thesis: Major, trace element and noble gas isotope composition of olivine from the alkaline basalts of the Perșani Volcanic Field, Romania: constraints on the magma source region.
On June 1, the European Geoparks Network celebrates the International Volcano Day among geoparks. This provides an excellent opportunity not only to showcase the region’s outstanding volcanic natural heritage, but also to explain why and how volcanoes work and how awareness of this natural hazard can be increased. Some members of the research group have been conducting studies at Ciomadul already for two decades. Their research has contributed to the international recognition of the volcanic area located near Băile Tușnad (Tusnádfürdő) as a characteristic example of a long-dormant volcano.
This year Emese Pánczél represented our research group with an oral presentation at the European Geosciences Union conference in Vienna. We are so proud of her work and results.

From 17 to 20 March 2026, Sopron (Hungary) hosted the 7th AdriaArray Workshop. One of the key themes of the meeting was the role of volcanism in the geodynamic evolution of the region, with a particular focus on Cenozoic volcanism across the wider Adria‑Array domain, extending from the Pannonian Basin through the Dinarides to the Southern Alps.
We are delighted to share that Ármin Timár, who has recently graduated from the MSc Geology program at ELTE and completed his thesis research within our group, has been awarded the prestigious MEXT Research Scholarship.
With this support, Ármin will continue his academic journey as a PhD student at Kyushu University in Japan, working under the supervision of Professor Nobuo Geshi.
We warmly congratulate Ármin on this outstanding achievement and wish him great success in his upcoming research and the exciting new chapter ahead.
On 1 February 2026, the REALISE Horizon–MSCA Doctoral Network was launched. Bringing together eight European institutions – including Eötvös Loránd University – the network offers opportunities for 15 doctoral candidates to combine volcanic eruption forecasting and critical raw materials research with machine‑learning and artificial‑intelligence‑based methods.
The central theme of this year’s 21st Winter School in Mineral Sciences was “Smart Minerals”, providing an excellent opportunity to present the latest results of our research group. At the event, three of our members delivered presentations in the form of two talks closely related to the conference theme.
